The federal government is changing how homes are built in communities across the country—by working with the housing sector and supporting innovative ways to boost Canada’s housing supply.

The new Housing Design Catalogue, an initiative under Canada’s Housing Plan supported by the 2024 budget, features around 50 standardized low-rise housing designs comprised of rowhouses, fourplexes, sixplexes, and accessory dwelling units. Once the final architectural design packages are available, the catalogue will help simplify and speed up housing delivery across the country.

The federal government released the final renderings, floor plan layouts, and key building details last week, which will give homeowners, builders, and communities a head start in their planning processes.

Numerous principles were considered during the development phase to help ensure it supports the goals of Canada’s housing system. These principles include adaptability and accessibility, energy efficiency, financial feasibility, regional construction methods and materials use, and compliance with local regulations and building codes.

Once the final architectural designs are ready, the Housing Design Catalogue will help builders streamline the process from concept to construction, cutting costs and speeding up housing delivery. The catalogue simplifies design, ensures compliance with building codes, and helps estimate costs.

The final renderings, floor plan layouts, and key building details are now available.
