The South Niagara Hospital reached a new milestone as the project is on its way to becoming Canada’s first WELL-certified hospital.

Niagara Health, Infrastructure Ontario, and EllisDon worked on this project that has now achieved WELL Precertification through the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI)’s WELL v2 pilot. The hospital is set to open in 2028.

The hospital will feature 14 gardens and terraces throughout the building and many outdoor walking paths and trails around the property.

Some features for the staff include a gym, team rooms, walking paths, and ergonomic workstations with height-adjustable desks.

Further, the project focuses on improved air and water quality, increased walkability within the building, more nutritional food offerings, an emphasis on nature, as well as access to natural daylight.

The WELL Certification program is a scientifically developed and independently verified tool for designing buildings and measuring their impact on the health and well-being of their occupants.
