The City of Calgary and Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC) recently revealed the design for Scotia Place—a new hockey arena for the Calgary Flames.

The ancestral and historical land influences the design. The culturally significant site brings together Indigenous perspectives with the region’s, reflecting the four elements of nature: fire, ice, land, and air.

A striking feature of the building is its central structure, which has a textured flame motif that emulates a home fire. The home fire rises from the white, glacial-like forms that define the lower parts of the building.

Scotia Place will be a landmark attraction in Calgary’s emerging Culture + Entertainment District. More than a building, however, the 4.04-ha (10-acre) city block is designed for community and connection. It includes a community rink, outdoor and indoor plaza spaces, four restaurants, the Calgary Flames Team Store, and future development opportunities in the northeast corner.

Scotia Place will open in fall 2027.
