The tallest office tower in Calgary has made Emporis’s list of most impressive corporate buildings from around the world.

Designed by Foster+Partners, the Bow is the corporate headquarters for EnCana, a Canadian petroleum and gas producer. The building, which opened last year, stands 50 storeys, or 236 m (774 ft), and includes a large crescent-shaped steel structure—an eye-catching feature of its design.

Industry experts from international building data provider, Emporis, chose structures based on design, esthectics, and corporate architecture criteria.

The group’s Matthew Keutenius explains this is the first year this type of list has been compiled.

“Design, visual impact and the function of the buildings were considered; while these aspects naturally all mesh together, certain aspects come more to the forefront for certain buildings,” he told Construction Canada Online. “What all the buildings have in common is they are statements that contribute to a company’s identity or brand.”

The corporate architecture aspect was displayed differently in each building. For example, the adidas LACES building in Herzogenaurach, Germany, was designed to resemble a sneaker’s footprint—the main focus of its product line.

Other buildings included on the list are:

  • Petronas Towers (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia);
  • The Lloyd’s Building (London);
  • BMW Building (Munich); and
  • Riviera TwinStar Square (Shanghai).
