In a continued effort to help mitigate any future flood activity, the City of Calgary has broken ground on a $50-million permanent flood barrier in Sunnyside.

The barrier will feature a combination of permanent flood walls and sheet walls, as well as temporary deployable systems (i.e. sandbags and water-filled tubes) and demountable flood walls.

Part of the project will include pathway enhancements, including defined lanes for cyclists and pedestrians and widening the pathway where possible.

Calgary is investing in Sunnyside, Hillhurst, and along the Memorial Park Corridor to increase flood resiliency and create spaces that enhance the connection with the river, community, and natural environment, all while commemorating the city’s heritage.

The new flood barrier will also provide the building blocks for future climate resiliency.
