Last week, some of the country’s leaders in green building and sustainable design gathered in Toronto to examine community-wide sustainable development principles promoting healthy living and the conservation of natural resources.
The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) held its annual National Conference and Expo from June 11 to 13 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC). This year’s theme, “Beyond Buildings: The Green City,” covered next-generation buildings and communities, revitalizing existing neighbourhoods, advances in building performance, and innovations in green homes and affordable housing.
Keynote speakers included:
• Ken Greenberg, architect, urban designer, author, and principal at Greenberg Consultants Inc.;
• Stephen Lewis, visiting professor at Ryerson University in Toronto; and
• Raymond J. Cole, director of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of British Columbia (UBC).
With 850 participants in attendance, the event included networking opportunities, over 30 educational seminars and workshops, and green building site tours around the city.
A gala reception and dinner was also held to honour the 2012 Leadership Award recipients, which included:
• Andy Kesteloo Memorial Student Project Award: Simon VanGrootheest;
• CaGBC Academic Leadership Award: Algonquin College (Ottawa);
• CaGBC Emerging Green Builder Award: Aaron Short;
• CaGBC Green Building Champion Award: Vivian Manasc; and
