Cross Fraser Partnership, a consortium of four architecture companies in Canada, has been selected to design the next stage of the new eight-lane tunnel that will replace the Fraser River Tunnel.

The new crossing is a toll-free, eight-lane, immersed tube tunnel with three general-purpose travel lanes and a dedicated public transit lane in each direction. The new tunnel will also feature a separate multi-use path to support walking, biking, and other active transportation options.

In June, crews began erecting the 21 concrete girders to support the new interchange’s first half.

Major construction for the project is estimated to begin in 2026.
