Architecture Canada gives top honours

Architecture Canada has chosen this year’s winners for emerging and experienced architects.

A teacher and architect, Lola Sheppard, MRAIC, was honoured with the Young Architect Award for her passion about the relationship between architecture and nature. She examines architecture’s capacity to sustain local ecosystems and cultures through her work in Northern Canada, Iceland, Faroe Islands, and Greenland.

Sheppard received her master of architecture degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 2001. In 2003, she became the founding partner of Toronto design firm Lateral Office, and in 2008, the founding director of InfraNet Lab, a research laboratory.

Winning this year’s Gold Medal was Peter Cardew, MRAIC. Recognized for a significant contribution to Canadian architecture, he opened his own practice in 1980. Before that, he worked in England and Germany, and was a partner and project team designer for several award-winning buildings for Vancouver’s Rhone & Iredale.

Both will receive their awards at the 2012 Festival of Architecture held next month in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
