The ATCO Gas North Edmonton Operations Centre has been presented with a technology award for its design of a thermal heating and cooling system in the building.
The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) has recognized Arrow Engineering with its Technology Award—which recognizes a mechanical design incorporating ASHRAE standards for energy management and indoor air quality (IAQ)—for the design of a natural-gas-fired heat pump geothermal heating and cooling system.
The system installed in the 5110-m2 (55,000-sf) facility is the largest commercial application of its kind in the country and uses approximately 40 per cent less energy than a building of a similar size heated by a conventional system. The use of this system has also resulted in annual energy savings equivalent to 60 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
“The building has exceeded expectations and significantly reduces our environmental footprint,” Bill Stephens, ATCO Gas’ senior vice-president and general manager said.
After the success of the North Edmonton Operations Centre, ATCO also installed the same heating system in its operations centre in Airdrie, Alta., which opened earlier this year.
