A pair of Vancouver convention centre projects are among this year’s recipients of the 2013 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Institute Honor Awards, recognizing excellence in interior and exterior architecture and urban design.
One of the Canadian winners, the Vancouver Convention Centre, is an 8.9-ha (22-acre) waterfront development. The project designed by LMN Architects achieved the Canada Green Building Council’s (CaGBC’s) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification, becoming the first convention centre to receive the designation. The ultra-clear glass exterior ties the interior to the exterior habitat of the city’s harbour.
“At LMN, we continually strive to produce architecture that effectively addresses the increasing complexities of contemporary urban life, helps create better cities, and sharpens cultural identity,” the firm’s partner, George Shaw, told Construction Canada Online. “Award programs recognize exceptional design achievement to establish a standard of excellence against which all architects can measure performance, to elevate the quality of professional discourse, and to inform the public of the value of architectural practice.”
The Coal Harbour Convention District is the second Vancouver project to receive the AIA Institute Honor Award. The development, also on the city’s harbour, extends the pedestrian space of the convention centre. There is a plaza, walking space, and the country’s largest vegetated roof at 2.4 ha (6 acres).
There were a total of 700 entry submissions and 28 international winners chosen by a jury. The awards will be distributed at the AIA 2013 National Convention and Design Exposition in Denver later this year.
