As part of an ongoing initiative to rapidly address housing issues, Montgomery Sisam Architects collaborated with CityHousing Hamilton to design modular affordable housing, aimed at providing housing for those currently experiencing homelessness.

The three-storey modular building will accommodate 24 studio-style resident units. Montgomery Sisam Architects developed the project in collaboration with NRB Modular Solutions, Peel Passive House, and CityHousing Hamilton.

The exterior features dark metal cladding, while the interior features wood finishes throughout the lobby and public areas, including a multipurpose room for social gatherings, cooking shows, and community meetings.

The project uses the factory-controlled setting of prefab construction to deliver a highly efficient, well-insulated building envelope. Designed to control its climate and maintain its temperature without an active heating or cooling system, the building will reduce energy consumption and living costs over its lifetime.

The design also features photovoltaic (PV) panels with the most intense solar exposure to support its fully electric heating and cooling systems.

The Hamilton Passive House Modular Housing has achieved the Certified Passive House Classic designation, making it the third Passive House-certified multi-residential building in Ontario and the second in Hamilton.
