The new Tecumseth Municipal Offices in Alliston, Ont., constructed by the Ventin Group Ltd. (+VG Architects), has received the Ontario Woodworks Award.

The municipal office is an adaptive reuse of the former Alliston Union Public School as the new seat of municipal government and offices for the town.

The main beams are glulam, while the roof joists are solid timber. The underside of the exposed roof deck comprises tongue-and-groove boards of spruce pine fir (SPF), the most common grade of lumber in Ontario.

To extend the life of projecting beams, they have been capped with aluminum to prevent water wicking in through the ends.

Reorganizing the building and site was accomplished through a new double-height gallery addition as the main element of the building. The 4,180-m2 (45,000-sf) project was completed in the spring of 2024. The budget was $16 million.

The WoodWorks program awards, newly integrated with the Canadian Wood Council’s Wood Design & Building Awards program, were held in Toronto on October 22, 2024.

The awards recognize and celebrate the outstanding work of architectural professionals worldwide who showcase excellence in wood design and construction.
