To stay up-to-date with scientific data regarding the world’s forest population, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) has launched three new standards for 2015 to 2019.
The Forest Management Standard includes measures to protect water quality, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, species at risk, and forests with high conservation value. It promotes sustainable forestry practices based on SFI’s specific SFI principles, objectives, performance measures, and indicators.
The Fibre Sourcing Standard includes measures to increase the conservation of biodiversity, use management practices to protect water quality, and provide outreach for both landowners and harvesting professionals.
Finally, the Chain of Custody Standard traces the percentage of fibre from certified forests, certified sourcing, and recycled content through production and manufacturing. To track and communicate chain of custody claims worldwide, organizations can use physical separation, average percentage, or volume credit methods.
“The decisions we make every day directly affect the health and future of our forest,” said Kathy Abusow, SFI president and CEO. “The new SFI 2015–2019 Standard offers a proof point that the forest has been managed for multiple environmental, social, and economic values—today and tomorrow. Architects and builders are turning to products certified to the SFI Standard to meet green building requirements.”
