At the 2011 Ontario Concrete Awards Banquet, several of the province’s top projects were honoured for innovation in both form and function.
The program, run by several of Ontario’s cement and concrete providers and trade organizations, were given to design teams comprising owners, architects, engineers, general contractors, and material suppliers.
The Architectural Merit Award went to the Automotive Centre of Excellence (Oshawa), designed by Diamond and Schmitt Architects, while Waterfront Toronto’s Sherbourne Common park took the top spot for hardscape. Another high-profile project, Mississauga’s Absolute World, won in the mid- to high-rise residential building category, with developers Dominus cited.
Other winners included:
• Infrastructure: Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) widening in St. Catharines (Dufferin Concrete, a division of Holcim);
• Institutional: Toronto Pearson International Airport Value Park Garage in Mississauga (NORR Ltd.);
• Material development and innovation–Cast-in-place: Lafarge Technical Centre in Toronto (Innocon);
• Material development and innovation–Precast: Toronto Pearson International Airport Value Park Garage in Mississauga (Armtec Ltd. Partnership);
• Specialty concrete products: Courtcliffe Park Phase 3 in Hamilton (Public Works);
• Structural design innovation: York University Life Sciences Building in Toronto (Blackwell Bowick Partnership Ltd.); and
• Sustainable concrete construction: “A Grander View” in Kitchener (Enermodal Engineering).
