The American Concrete Institute (ACI) Fall 2012 Convention, hosted by the group’s Ontario Chapter, drew 1400 professionals from around the world to Toronto’s Sheraton Centre.

From October 21 to 25, the world’s most widely used building material was the focus of student competitions, technical tours, committee meetings, and professional development seminars. The event, titled “Forming Our Future,” also included an exhibit hall and various networking opportunities for those involved with the Division 03 material.

The conference’s technical education component offered attendees more than 50 sessions, including an in-depth two-part panel discussion on emerging technologies, such as:

  • photocatalytic concrete;
  • reclaimed aggregate;
  • shotcrete advancements;
  • zinc oxide retarders; and
  • portland-limestone cement (PLC).

Other topics included blast testing, liquid-containing structures, sustainability, and advancements. A special look at the role of building information modelling (BIM) was moderated by Construction Canada author, Neb Erakovic, M.A.Sc., P.Eng.

ACI’s next convention takes place in Minnesota’s Twin Cities this spring. For more information, visit www.aciconvention.org.
