The Sun Life Building in downtown Montréal has been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification for Existing Building by the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC).
The building has become the first 100-year-old building in North America to obtain triple Platinum certification for excellence in environmental performance and digital connectivity, having already earned BOMA BEST Platinum certification from Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) Canada and WIRED Platinum certification from WiredScore.
Built in the neoclassical style between 1914 and 1933, the Sun Life Building stands at 122 m (400 ft) with 26 floors providing more than 92,903 m2 (1 million sf) of surface area.
“This certification is in keeping with the values adopted by Sun Life, which has prioritized sustainable development in its efforts to build healthy and sustainable communities for more than 150 years,” said Robert Dumas, president of Sun Life in Québec.
In attaining this objective, the Sun Life Building scored higher than the level required for Platinum certification. The building’s performance and efficiency was measured in five sectors: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.
