American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) has proposed changes to its 90.1-2010, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-rise Residential Buildings, regarding automatic lighting controls.
The need to re-evaluate changes to the standard came from design industry members requesting a tabular structure for specifying control requirements.
“The new tabular format for interior lighting controls eliminates the lengthy text that must be waded through to determine the requirements for each space type,” Eric Richman, chair of the standard’s lighting subcommittee explained. “Instead, each space type’s requirements are easily identified in a table with accompanying short text to further describe requirements details.”
The current version of the standard includes basic control requirements for some types of spaces. The changes will increase building’s energy-efficiency by occupancy-based control in all suitable areas. Additionally, partial on/off controls will be added to reduce lighting in unoccupied locations.
The addendum is open for public review until March 17, Jodi Scott, ASHRAE’s communications manager explained to Construction Canada Online.
“ASHRAE standards are unique in that the society follows a strong consensus standards development process, which draws a wide variety of professional disciplines and perspectives,” Scott said. “ASHRAE considers comments by all affected interests and the committees writing the standards are represented by impacted stakeholders.”
