Plans for a new mixed-use facility in Ajax, Ont., which will be part of a new vision for the town’s downtown redevelopment, have been unveiled.

Designed by Zeidler Partnership Architects, the $118.7-million Grand Hardwood Place project includes two building phases with hope the final product will become the landmark location in the renewed downtown.

The project is a redevelopment of the existing Ajax Plaza, a commercial centre built in the 1950s to serve a much smaller population. Large increases in residents and new retail locations have resulted in the current structure no longer being the main commercial centre.

Included in the first development stage is construction of two 10-storey condominium buildings with 268 units, 2787-m2 (30,000 sf) of retail space, and 2322 m2 (30,000 sf) of office space. This building will be the first new-build condominiums in the town in nearly 20 years.

The design also includes pedestrian-friendly elements—such as walking and cycling spaces—and sustainable elements including efficient roofing assemblies and stormwater runoff technology.
