Canadian projects have been named as top of their class in the 2013 Society for College and University Planning/American Institute of Architects (SCUP/AIA) awards program.

The annual excellence awards are distributed in eight separate categories for planning, landscape architecture, and architecture in post-secondary education facilities across North America.

Diamond Schmitt Architects received the Honour Award in the Excellence in Architecture for Building Additions or Adaptive Reuse category for its Ryerson Image Centre.

The facility is a renovated and expanded gallery space in Toronto, and includes curatorial and graduate study space, storage vaults, and galleries. The structure was previously a brewery warehouse with no windows, but is now clad in double-skin glass concealing a light-emitting diode (LED) system.

Additional Canadian projects honoured this year include:

  • New Building–Honour: George Brown College’s Waterfront Campus (Stantec Architecture);
  • New Building–Merit: University of British Columbia’s (UBC’s) Earth Sciences Building (Perkins+Will); and
  • Building Additions to Adaptive Reuse–Honour: Decelles Building Renovation (HEC Montréal).
