Canadian metal roofing project honoured

Vancouver’s VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre was recognized with a 2013 Chairman’s Award from the Metal Construction Association (MCA).

The Van Dusen project, designed by Perkins+Will, received the award in the Metal Roofing category. The building’s unique orchid-inspired design employs metal panels that reach the ground in a half-barrel shape.

The other winning projects are:

  • Overall Excellence: Central Arizona College Maricopa Campus, Maricopa, Arizona;
  • Commercial/Industrial: Cirrus Logic Building, Austin, Texas;
  • Education-Primary and Secondary Schools: Sherwood Middle School, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts;
  • Education-Colleges and Universities: MassArt Student Residence Hall, Boston, Massachusetts;
  • Municipal: FDNY Fireboat Firehouse, New York, New York;
  • Institutional: The Tower Hospital at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, Illinois; and
  • Residential: Private Residence, Takoma Park, Maryland.

Distributed annually at MetalCon International, the awards honour MCA member’s projects showcasing new and innovative uses of the material. A panel of architects chooses the winners in eight separate categories.
