In memoriam: Past-president Dinshaw Kanga, FCSC

KangaDinshaw Kanga, FCSC—the association’s former president and a well-known and much-loved member of CSC’s Toronto Chapter—passed away on September 3.

Born in Mumbai, India in 1935, Dinshaw graduated as an architect from J.J. School of Arts in Mumbai in 1959, emigrating to Canada in 1976. He worked with Gore & Storrie and CH2M Hill for nearly 40 years. During this time, he designed award-winning municipal structures (including water-treatment plants), and Canada’s first IKEA store.

In 1994, he became CSC president, joining the College of Fellows the following year. Dinshaw most recently served as the Membership Officer for the Toronto Chapter where he organized many of its social programs and welcomed new members to CSC.

In the book, CSC: Fifty Years of Serving the Construction Industry, Dinshaw shared the following:

“A building is constructed through the teamwork of the developer, architect, engineer, specifier, supplier, and contractor. Together, they produce something that individually they can’t do. Their success lies in their collaboration. So it is with CSC.

Our success … is due to the combined efforts of hundreds of our volunteers working on both Chapter and Association committees. Together, we have built and strengthened CSC beyond the ability of any one Chapter, Board, committee, or individual.

CSC is considered as that type of association that demonstrates ‘best practices’ in its vision, its activities, and its preparation for future relevance to members. All this reflects the dedication of our volunteers and their continuing belief that CSC is a meaningful and fulfilling association for them.”

Dinshaw Kanga will be missed by his wife of 52 years, Armaity, along with his son Persius, daughter-in-law Mary Jane, granddaughters Natalie and Nicole, and his CSC family. Memorial donations may be made to the Toronto Rehab Foundation.

The Toronto Chapter will be celebrating the man’s life at its Annual Chapter Celebration. An online condolences page is also available.
