The West Park Healthcare Centre in Toronto, a facility that provides rehabilitation services and complex care after life‐altering illnesses or injuries, recently underwent a significant transformation.
The new 67,819 m2 (730,000 sf) ambulatory care centre, which replaces a series of aging hospital buildings, is the latest addition to the historic site.
Designed by CannonDesign and Montgomery Sisam Architects, the centre uses natural materials on the interior and incorporates elements of nature inside and outside the building to foster a holistic healing environment.
The new facility comprises three interconnected wings, ensuring a seamless and efficient flow between clinical and patient areas. Each patient wing is connected to an outdoor terrace.
On the exterior, the building reflects West Park’s natural heritage through the use of wood-look soffits, aluminum and copper-zinc alloy cladding, brick, and stone.
Other unique design elements include a fireplace lounge, a spiritual care centre, a therapeutic pool, a rooftop garden, and unique art pieces that were donated to the hospital.
The facility was created to meet evolving needs and set new standards in rehabilitative care through its patient-centred philosophy and the use of nature.
The project is targeting LEED Silver certification.
