Oakville community centre keeps sustainability at the forefront

By making sustainability and accessibility the cornerstones of its design, the Oakville Trafalgar Community Centre, a health and wellness centre in Ontario, has received LEED Gold certification.
The 4,974 m2 (53,550 sf) building makes use of 1,300 energy-efficient rooftop solar panels and a geo-thermal field for heating and cooling. The Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) team, comprised of design consultants, contractors, and the Town of Oakville, tested energy conservation methods using iterative modelling and evaluated the 30-year life-cycle costs and impact on finances and carbon emissions.
The project, located on a former hospital site, includes a new park, as well as a renovation of an existing parking garage.
The centre itself features a double gym, with an upper-level walking track; as well as an aquatic facility with a six-lane 25 m (82 ft) pool and a warm water pool. The main program spaces are organized along the double height galleria with an exposed mass timber roof deck.
