This summer, Montreal’s Olympic Park will launch an international competition to reuse and repurpose the materials and structural components of the stadium’s roof’s dismantling.

The roof’s current two membranes (outer and inner), cover an area of 42,000 m2 (452,084 sf); the cables total approximately 12 km (7.5 mi); and the roof’s framework comprises 434 steel connectors that secure cables.

For the competition, design and architecture professionals and students worldwide are invited to propose creative and innovative solutions to repurpose the roof’s components, including the cables supporting the present dome, the inner and outer membranes, as well as the fittings that support the structure. The Québec population will then be asked to vote for their favourite among the eight ideas selected by a jury of recognized experts. Additionally, a monetary reward will be presented to four winners in the professional category and four in the student category.

This initiative is part of a broader approach to sustainable development.
