The City of Summerside in Prince Edward Island will receive a $2 million grant from the federal government for the development of Atlantic Canada’s inaugural certified passive energy designed industrial facility.
The 1570-m2 (16,900-sf) building, located in the Summerside Business Commons Eco-Park, will address the current demand for a research and manufacturing space. The funding will be channeled through Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency’s (ACOA’s) Regional Economic Growth through Innovation (REGI) program. Prince Edward Island is providing further $1 million in grant support through Innovation PEI.
As reported by CBC, while at a news conference, an architect involved in the project from the firm, Open Practice Inc., explained the facility will run more than twice better than the energy standards currently implemented in the province. He said: “To put it in perspective, this facility will operate annually only on electricity. There’s no carbon [or] fossil fuels being used in this facility.”
“The Summerside Eco-Park project is a testament of how we can support both economic growth and combatting climate change in Prince Edward Island. Our province set an ambitious goal of reaching net zero by 2040, and this initiative is a positive step forward in that direction,” says Honourable Gilles Arsenault, P.E.I. minister of economic development, innovation, and trade.
Where’s the electricity coming from
Is it solar generated electricity? That would be good.
